2012 Georgetown Training Institute System of Care Conference
Pennsylvania Youth Support Partners in Action!

On July 26, 27 and 28th 2012, the Pennsylvania Youth Support Partner (YSP) and YSP Coaching role was presented at the National Georgetown Training Institute Conference in Orlando, Florida. Chad Owens, a Bucks County YSP, as well as Allegheny County YSP Coaches Aaron Thomas and Markese Long gave two presentations discussing the YSP approach in PA. These presentations covered the work that Allegheny County has done regarding the Youth Peer Movement, as well as the coaching and credentialing of the Youth Support Partners through the Youth and Family Training Institute. The presentation also covered the support needed to maintain the health and wellness of the Youth Support Position at the local level.   Both presentations were well received, and the rooms were filled to capacity.

In addition to the presentation, Aaron and Chad along with Shannon Fagan, Director of YFTI and Dr. Ken Nash, Co- Administrator at YFTI participated in a Poster Session regarding the overall movement of the YSP position. This session covered how the role was created, how youth, family and system partners were surveyed regarding the characteristics and qualifications that a YSP in PA should have, and the development of the credentialing process and implications. The poster was a great experience and was visited by Frank Ryder, Pennsylvania’s Technical Assistant for the System of Care Process; Eric Burns- Ph.D, National Evaluator on the HFW fidelity work; and Gary Blau, Ph. D, Clinical Psychologist and Chief of the Child, Adolescent and Family Branch of the federal Center for Mental Health Services, Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA).
