How to Get Involved
Because you have lived with a mental health or behavioral health diagnosis, you know the challenges of living day to day. It would be unlikely for you to be at this website if you were not looking for a change or a way to become a part of something that could positively impact you and others in similar situations.
You should be leaving “no stone unturned” in your efforts to find a healthy path towards recovery. And, as you know because you’ve been in the system long enough, it oftentimes is a trial and error approach to finding what the most appropriate treatment is for you.
The process involved in High Fidelity Wraparound offers a new approach that works for many people. We all know that at some point, we cannot fully depend upon those individuals paid to work with us. At some point, we need to learn how to depend on ourselves and those around us we consider to be supportive. And, we need to learn how to build confidence in ourselves, and help family members build their confidence. Because with dedication and perseverance, things can work out.
Parents and guardians of youth with behavioral and mental health issues worry about the future. Parents and guardians want children to learn not just how to survive without them, but to have a good quality of life. You have worried about your future. Understanding recovery, and how to advocate is important. Learning what is involved in change, and that you can be instrumental in creating change is a strong and life-long lesson.
If High Fidelity Wraparound is being implemented in your county, please see if you and your family are eligible to be a part of the program. If, for some reason you don’t fit the specific criteria at this time, work with your county to consider broadening the eligibility requirements for the next level of implementation.
Another way to become involved in improving your life and the lives of other young people struggling with behavioral and/or mental health issues is to start or join a youth support group or organization. Talk about recovery and resiliency with your family and peers to help make it a part of your everyday vocabulary. Learn more about the High Fidelity Wraparound model and process. If you’ve been a part of the process, think about becoming a Youth Support Partner. Once you have been exposed to your County’s High Fidelity Wraparound initiative and/or youth support network, look for other opportunities.
Opportunities that are positive and may need youth representation are the YFTI Advisory Board and the System of Care State Leadership and Management Committee, which is comprised equally of youth and family representatives and top officials from Mental Health, Child Welfare, Juvenile Justice, and the Governor’s Commission on Youth and Families. This team is responsible for guiding the Pennsylvania System of Care Partnership. Comparable youth, family and professional governance structures will also be established in the Partner Counties.
If you would like to learn more about High Fidelity Wraparound, or how to try to get your county to implement it, please contact the Youth and Family Training Institute and/or your MH/MR County Administrator.
