How to Get Involved
As family members who have lived with, and are raising children, adolescents and young adults with behavioral health and mental health issues, we know the challenges that can go into each day. We also know that it is so important to leave “no stone unturned” when it comes to finding the right kind of care and treatment for those we love.
The process involved in High Fidelity Wraparound offers a new approach that works for many people. We all know that at some point, we cannot fully depend upon those individuals paid to work with us. At some point, we need to learn how to depend upon ourselves and those around us we consider to be supportive. And, we need to learn to build our confidence, and the confidence of our children that with dedication and perseverance, things will work out.
Parents and guardians of youth with behavioral and mental health issues worry about the future. We know that our children must learn how to survive without us. Teaching them how to advocate for themselves is very important. Teaching them what is involved in change, and that they can be instrumental in creating change is a strong and life-long lesson.
If High Fidelity Wraparound is in your county, please see if you and your family are eligible to be a part of the program. If, for some reason you don’t fit the specific criteria at this time, work with your county Mental Health/Intellectual Disability (MH/ID) Administrators to consider broadening the eligibility requirements for the next level of implementation.
Another way to become involved in improving your life and the lives of other families struggling with behavioral and/or mental health issues is to start or join a support group or family organization. Talk about recovery and resiliency with your family and peers to help make it a part of your everyday vocabulary. Learn more about the High Fidelity Wraparound model and process. If you’ve been a part of the process, think about becoming a Family Support Partner. Once you have been exposed to your county’s High Fidelity Wraparound initiative and/or family support network, look for other opportunities.
Opportunities that are positive and may need family representation are the YFTI Advisory Board and the System of Care State Leadership Committee, which is comprised equally of youth and family representatives and top officials from Mental Health, Child Welfare, Juvenile Justice, and the Governor’s Commission on Youth and Families. This team is responsible for guiding the Pennsylvania System of Care Partnership. Comparable youth, family and professional governance structures will also be established in the Partner Counties.
If you would like to learn more about High Fidelity Wraparound, or how to try to get your county to implement it, please contact the Youth and Family Training Institute and/or your county MH/MR Administrators.
